The Librie's screen achieves its level of sharpness by using microcapsules 40 microns in diameter that contain dozens of charged black and white particles (with opposite charges) suspended in an oil solution. The device uses electromagnetic fields to draw black or white particles to the surface of each capsule to render the image.
Its creator is E Ink Corp. of Cambridge, Mass. The other chief partners in developing the Librie, apart from Sony, are Royal Philips Electronics of the Netherlands and Toppan Printing Co. of Japan.
